History and Mission
The Global Seat of Sharda Sarvagya Peetham is a spiritual and educational center dedicated to preserving and promoting the ancient wisdom and knowledge of the tradition of the Indian subcontinent worldwide.
The formation of Sharda Peeth is rooted in the ancient Vedic texts that tell the story of Samudra Manthan or the Churning of the Ocean. According to the story, the Devas and Asuras churned the ocean to find the Amrit Kalash, or the Nectar of Immortality, to save humanity from suffering. When the Amrit appeared, the demons wanted it for themselves, which could have endangered humankind. The Gods decided to keep the Amrit safe from the Asuras and hide it in different locations on earth. Goddess Sharda took the shape of a black stone under which the Amrit Kalash was hidden. This led to the formation of Sharda Peeth, which was one of the 18 Maha Shakti-Peeths where the Gods hid the Amrit Kalash to save it from the demons, and the God of creation in the Hindu religion, Brahma, built the Sharda temple at that place which came to be known as the Sharda Peeth.
When Adi Shankaracharya visited Sharda Peeth for the first time, he found three of the four doors were open, but the Southern door was closed. The religious preachers and scholars explained that the four doors represent the four directions of knowledge. The Southern door is closed as they couldn’t find any enlightened spiritual being from that direction. Shankaracharya challenged them and had to participate in religious discourse and debate with them. After winning the discourse, Shankracharya was recognized as an enlightened spiritual leader who was then authorized to preach and was given the name Jagadguru, which means “the world teacher or preceptor.”
Our center is inspired by the vision and teachings of the great sage Adi Shankaracharya, who attained his authorization as a preacher of the Hindu religion from the Sharda Peeth. Maharshi Keshvananda ji Maharaj established the center to carry forward the vision that sought to promote the teachings of ancient wisdom and tradition, focusing on the philosophical and spiritual insights of the Vedic and Kashmir Shaivism traditions. He is authorized by Srimad Jagadguru Shankracharya AnantSri Swami Amritananda Dev Teerth Ji Maharaj, the Jagadguru Shankaracharya of the non-dualistic Advaita Vedanta tradition of the Upanishadic Niskalankamya lineage, is the current Peethadheeshwar (spiritual head) of the Sharda Sarvagya Sharda Peeth, Kashmir. He is honored as the Shankaracharya of Sharda Peeth by the Kashi Vidvat Parishad: International Council of Scholars and Researchers to promote ancient India Sanatan Heritage.
